International Students Admissions Process

International student applicants need to have completed at least the equivalent of twelve years of elementary and secondary education and have successfully passed all required examinations.

Applicants for Admission must complete the International Student Admissions Packet or complete the steps listed below:

Applicants for admissions must complete the Cayuga Community College Application Form.

 

English Proficiency/TOEFL Information

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate an acceptable level of English language proficiency. At this time, Cayuga Community College does not offer English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Please complete the TOEFL Information form and return to the address listed above or e-mail the form to admissions@cayuga-cc.edu.

Academic Records

Cayuga Community College advises students who wish to have their high school transcripts evaluated or to transfer in college credit to do so by an accredited organization. Please visit the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) website for more information at http://ies.aacrao.org/evaluations or the World Education Services at http://www.wes.org. Students may still enroll at the College without the evaluation, but must pass the entrance exam during their placement test.

Foreign Student Financial Statement (required for F-1 Students)

NOTE: Cayuga Community College has NO financial aid or scholarships available for international students. Students must demonstrate ability to pay for their total educational and living expenses for their entire enrollment at Cayuga.

F-1 visa applicants are required to demonstrate that they have financial resources to cover their educational expenses while attending Cayuga Community College.

The “Foreign Student Financial Statement” should be completed carefully. It MUST be accompanied by a current notarized bank statement supporting the information reported on the form. This form (FSA-4: Foreign Student Financial Statement [plus Instructions]).

First Semester Tuition Deposit

Please note: The first semester's tuition and fees of $4,400 (refundable if unable to attend) is due by August 1st for fall semester applicants and December 1st for spring semester applicants. Students may pay with a certified bank check, cash, wire transfer, or a valid Visa or MasterCard.

Placement Testing

International Admissions is a complex and competitive process which requires advance planning.

If you have not had your high school transcripts evaluated for transfer purposes to the United States by an organization such as WES, Cayuga offers the following process:

International Student Placement Test with essay

Following the submission of your application and the evaluation of your academic record, the Admissions Office will contact you regarding the process of taking the International Student Placement Test with essay. If you are required to take this test, you must meet minimum score requirements to be accepted to Cayuga Community College. If these scores are met, then in the process of earning a degree you will be participating in a 24 credit High School Equivalency program. The 24 credit program will provide you with the equivalent of a United States high school education prior to our granting a degree and will allow you to graduate with the desired degree from Cayuga Community College. In most degree programs the required course work is built into the degree program and requires no extra classes.

If you have had your high school transcripts evaluated for transfer purposes to the United States by an organization such as WES, and if high school equivalency is determined upon review, Cayuga offers the following process:

English/Math Placement Testing

All new students (domestic and international), without transferable college credit in English and Mathematics (or completed high school calculus) must take a placement test. The test is designed to gauge your academic skill level in reading comprehension, understanding of sentence structure, mathematical skill, and overall writing ability. These tests take approximately 2 hours to complete. The tests are Internet based and can be taken at remote locations.

Upon receipt of your application and transcripts, your academic record will be evaluated and if high school equivalency is determined, you will be informed if English/Math placement testing is required prior to registering for an English or Math course. If you have earned college credit in English or Math and believe the courses will satisfy the need to take the placement test, please have the transcripts forwarded as soon as possible.

Students, who have not previously earned college credit in English or Math, are highly encouraged to take the placement test prior to beginning their coursework at Cayuga. The placement test provides the information necessary to assure students are placed in the appropriate level college English and Math.

Please note: For students who are required to take the International Student Placement Test with essay, the results of that test will determine English and Math placement.

Taking the Test

• If a student is unable to take the English/Math placement test or International Student Placement Test with essay on the Cayuga Community College campus, the test may be taken online. If taken online, the student must locate an appropriate testing environment and an acceptable Proctor. Proctors can be Educators, Teachers, Administrators, Managers, Counselors, or others in a position of responsibility willing to administer the test in a secure environment (quiet space with no distractions or interruptions) with access to a computer work station connected to the Internet. Examples include a Library, school, college or university, learning center or other educational setting. Unacceptable sites include, but are not limited to, a parent's office, an Internet café, or a computer kiosk in a mall, airport or other public setting.
• Students must contact Emily Cameron in the Office of International Relations by e-mailing Emily.Cameron@cayuga-cc.edu or by phone (001) 315-294-8527 if s/he is planning on taking the test online. In addition, an e-mail must be sent to Emily.Cameron@cayuga-cc.edu with the following information: the name of the Proctor, job title, location of the test administration, and the Proctor's e-mail address. This information will be provided to Vicki Hamberger in the Academic Support Center (ASC). The ASC will then contact the Proctor to provide the secure web address for a training manual as well as access to the testing website, once the Proctor and test site are approved.
• The Proctor then downloads and prints the Training Manual and test information for the student.
• The Proctor administers the test and contacts the Admissions Office when the test sequence has been successfully administered.

The Acceptance Process

Once all the required documents are received by the Admissions Office, the applicant will be evaluated for admission to the College. The College must receive all necessary requirements — Academic, Financial and Linguistic must be received by August 1 for the Fall semester and December 1 for the Spring Semester. Any documents received after these date may prevent enrollment for the particular semester.

If the applicant meets all the necessary requirements – an official letter of acceptance will be mailed to the applicant.

The letter of acceptance and the I-20 must be presented to the United States Consulate or Embassy with passport along with all other required materials in order to obtain an F-1 student visa, which will allow the student to enter the United States.

Registration for classes can be done either in person upon arrival at the college, or over the telephone once all of the above steps have been completed.

To obtain an F-1 visa, the student will be required to pay a $200 fee for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). This is separate from the visa fee. Details are published at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website at www.ice.gov/sevis/i901/faq.htm.

An international student may be eligible for International Student Loans if they have a cosigner who is a US citizen or permanent resident (green card).
